Dan Watson Freelance Designer

Dan is a freelance designer who grabbed headlines in 2012 as the global winner of the James Dyson Award. His invention was SafetyNet – a series of illuminated rings which can be fitted into the trawler net to allow young and unmarketable fish to escape.

Dan studied Product Design Engineering at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University. After this he continued to the Royal College of Art where he studied a masters in Innovation Design Engineering.

Since winning the James Dyson Award, Dan has gone on to further prototype his rings. He’s had discussions with government agencies around sustainable fishing and has trialed the rings in a number of countries.
